"The vehicle presented to us in limp home mode with active fault codes 5188-P2463 and 5189-P2002 logged. The customer had already replaced his differential pressure sensor after doing some of his own diagnostics but could not get the car to complete a successful regeneration. After some initial diagnostics confirmed all sensors to be OK and the DPF indeed blocked we carried out the DPF Guru cleaning process. Within a couple of hours the clean was successfully completed, the fault codes cleared and vehicle returned to our client no longer in limp mode." The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is an emissions device fitted to the vehicles exhaust system to prevent harmful exhaust gas particulate matter entering the air we breathe. Manufacturers have been fitting DPF’s to vehicles in Australia since 2006. As of 2016 all diesel vehicles sold in Australia are required to have a DPF fitted.
Over time the DPF accumulates particulate or soot and will start to clog up. Most vehicles will actively or passively commence a regeneration to burn up the particulate into gas, allowing it to pass through the Filter and out the exhaust tail pipe. Some vehicles require long drives at high speed in order to create enough heat to regenerate the filter, and often this can’t be achieved in urban environments. Sensors are utilised by the engines computer to monitor the DPF soot level and temperatures during regeneration. If a sensor fails or is giving false readings the vehicle will not be able to complete an effective regeneration, this highlights the importance of diagnosis before having your filter cleaned. This week our Perth Northern Suburbs agent Neerabup Diesel Services had this 2015 VW Touareg 3.0 V6 Tdi delivered to them in limp mode after the customers local Volkswagen dealer declined a warranty repair & quoted $$$$’s to replace their blocked DPF filter with a 3 week wait for parts from Europe. Our agent carried out some preliminary diagnostics and found a faulty sensor had caused the DPF blockage.
